THE POWER OF THE WRITTEN WORD

Words in the hands of a skilled writer are a powerful tool. I was reminded of this fact by a quote from Seth Kantner, the author of Ordinary Wolves. Seth grew up in the far north of Alaska. He was asked if Jack London had influenced his writing. While admitting he did, Seth also points out that contrary to what London wrote, the water tossed out of a cup at 30 below doesn't covert to ice before it hits the ground. In fact it doesn't do that at 70 below, according to his personal experience. However, because Jack London describes this event in his books about the Yukon literally there are entire generations of readers who believe just that.

By the way it is now minus 2.
